WATER WADING AT VOLVO CARS

By 2025 Volvo Cars aims at having a 50% annual sale rate of fully electric vehicles to meet ambitious CO₂ emission targets. With the help of PreonLab, Volvo Cars is able to efficiently detect potential hazards and optimize designs on virtual prototypes. Johan Idoffsson wrote his master thesis mentored by Torbjörn Virdung at VolvoCars about the advantages of our unique implicit SPH solver.

High Performance

Each of the showcased simulations includes over 200 million particles with a simulation time of 36-54h on 2184 Cores.

I was Johan’s supervisor and he did an excellent job. This simulation technique has really given us an alternative to traditional Finite Volume Based CFD. With Particle based simulations we can move the vehicle exactly as we do when testing, which of course is beneficial when comparing simulations with reality.
